I am a Chartered Psychologist, Researcher and an Academic in the field of Psychology

About me

Dr Jolel Miah is a Chartered Psychologist and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy. He sits on the  British Psychology Society Equality Diversity and Inclusion Board. He is currently a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sunderland and co-chair for the Decolonisation Curriculum group and the Black Asian Minority Ethnic staff network. 

 

He graduated with a BSc in Psychology from the University of Hertfordshire and an MSc in Health Psychology from the University of Bedfordshire. He completed two doctorates (PhD and Stage 2 Qualification in Health Psychology - Independent Route) and submitted more than 17,000 hours over eight years for his portfolio. His research focused on psychological frameworks for public interventions in physical activity. His professional practice has involved working in commissioning, mental health, charities, sexual health, and the prison service, to name a few. 

 

In 2014 Jolel co-founded a mental health charity, 'Our Minds Matter' which provides psychoeducation on mental health in faith communities and consultancy to local wellbeing services. In addition, he hosts a podcast interviewing people about what motivates them called 'Psychology Cast. This is in addition to his social media material and YouTube channel educating the public on psychology concepts. 

Consultation Clinic

With 15 years of experience, I  work with individuals and organisations to help them reach their full potential by applying psychological principles in the work they do. This includes mentoring, behaviour change and motivation.

 

I am a member of the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Taskforce Division of Health Psychology British Psychological Society and Founder of the Mental Health charity 'Our Minds Matter' and hold various roles for a range of public bodies.

Teaching & Training

I am a Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Sunderland and an approved Mental Health First Aid Instructor for MHFA England. I also offer bespoke teaching and training.

 

I have also worked in the HM Prison Service teaching motivational interviewing behaviour change techniques and goal setting for prisoners. I also deliver workshops both face to face and in virtual settings for local and national organisations.

Research & Science Communication

I specialise in Mental Health in Faith communities and behaviour change interventions. My PhD research focused on evaluating a Physical Activity Intervention aimed at 20,000 residents. I have led and designed campaigns to reduce health inequalities and been a voice for underrepresented groups in academia.
